  • What’s the difference between a VIN decoder, Monroney label, and Window Sticker?

  • What key information does the Kia window sticker or VIN decoder provide?

  • What are some key details to know about how Kia describes packages and options?

  • What does the window sticker not provide?

What you’ll need to get the window sticker

As stated above, the information you will need to obtain the window sticker is your Kia Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN is an alpha-numeric seventeen-character code that serves as an identifier for a specific vehicle, meaning no two vehicles will have the same VIN. The vehicle’s VIN is used to track the car’s history from its original manufacturer date. This history can include:

  • Title and Registration Events

  • Ownership Changes

  • Accidents

  • Recalls

  • Service Records and Repairs

  • Previous Rental, Lease, and Fleet use

Where can I find my Kia VIN?

The VIN for your vehicle can be found on:

  • The plaque that is located on the driver’s side where the windshield meets the dashboard

  • The Driver’s side doorjamb

  • Your vehicle registration, title, or insurance papers

  • The firewall of your engine block under the hood of your vehicle

What’s the difference between a VIN decoder, Monroney label, and Window Sticker?

VIN Decoder: A VIN decoder breaks down the whole 17 alpha-numeric code and gives you information about the vehicle.

Each digit or letter in a VIN identifies for something different about the car:

  • Digits 1 through 3 show the World Manufacturer Identifier.

    • This information would include the Country of Origin, Make, and vehicle type.

  • Digits 4 through 8 describes the vehicle’s body type, engine type, and transmission

  • Digit 9 verifies the authenticity of the VIN like a security code.

  • Digits 10 through 17 identifies the model year, manufacturing plant, and production number.

Window Sticker: A Window Sticker is a label that is required to be displayed on all new vehicles being sold in the United States. The information listed on a Window sticker includes, but is not limited to:

  • The vehicle VIN

  • Engine Type

  • Fuel MPG

  • Safety Rating

  • Standard Features (retail price, exterior color, etc.)

  • Add-on Features

In 2013, the labels were updated to also include:

  • Greenhouse gas ratings

  • Smog emissions ratings

  • A QR Code

Monroney Label: A Monroney Label is just another name for a window sticker. The name comes from Almer Stillwell “Mike” Monroney, an Oklahoma senator, who sponsored the Automobile Information Disclosure Act of 1958. The passage of this act is the reason why manufacturers and dealers must include window stickers on all new vehicles.

What does the window sticker not provide?

A window sticker is most accurate when a vehicle is just manufactured. It will not show any after-market parts or replacement parts that were added by an owner or a dealership.

The MSRP listed on the window sticker may not be the price it sold for. During the sale of the vehicle, often car salesmen offer discounts for certain vehicles or customers negotiate a lower price, so the MSRP listed on the window sticker is often just the starting price, not the final sale price.

The price listed on the Monroney label will also not accurately represent the current valuation of your vehicle. A car’s value depreciates by 30 to 40% in the first 2 years of life and to as much as 60% in the first 5 years. To obtain an accurate estimate of what your car’s current worth, we would recommend checking out https://www.kbb.com/ to find the Kelly Blue Book Value for your vehicle.

Lastly, the sticker will not reflect the current condition of the vehicle or if the vehicle has been in any accidents. For information on vehicle history, including previous ownership, accidents, service history, and mileage, we recommend checking out the vehicle’s Carfax or Autocheck report.

When does this Free Kia Window Sticker or VIN decoder not work?

The VIN decoder tool will only work for certain manufacturers and vehicle’s 2013 model year or newer. The tool currently works for Audi, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jeep, Kia, Lexus, Porsche, Maserati, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Ram, Scion, Toyota, and Volkswagen.

If you meet the above eligibility criteria, other reasons the VIN decoder might not working are:

  • VIN is less than 17 digits

    • Double-check that no characters are missing in the input VIN

    • All VINs have 17 digits. The only vehicle that do not are those produced in 1981 or earlier

  • VIN contains illegal characters

    • No VINs will contain a Q, I, or O because of the confusion with the number 1 and 0.

  • Does not pass the checksum test

    • A checksum test is used in the U.S. and Canada to determine a VIN’s validity.

  • The vehicle model is too new to show up in the system
